Practising doubles and scoring

Around the World, Bob's 27, doubles practice, scoring practice, Count-Up and JDC Challenge: rules and tips for the all-round exercises.

Two things decide almost every leg: how many points you score per visit and how reliably you hit the double. These exercises train exactly that.

Around the World

The classic warm-up. You hit every segment in order, from 1 to 20 and then the bull. Variants make it harder: doubles only, trebles only, backwards, random order or several hits per segment.

  1. Hit the fields in order, the bull last. The next field only comes once the current one is hit.
  2. Rings, order, hits per field and jumps are set before the start.
  3. Multiple players take turns after every 3-dart visit. Whoever finishes with the fewest darts wins.

Bob's 27

Bob's 27 with the current target D7, the score and the hits of the visit
  1. Your current score. If it drops to 0 or below, the game is over.
  2. The double you're currently throwing at.
  3. For each dart you tap hit or miss.

Invented by world champion Bob Anderson and one of the best doubles exercises. The pressure of losing points feels like a real game.

  1. You start with 27 points and throw 3 darts each at D1, D2 and so on up to D20, then the bullseye.
  2. Every hit scores the value of the double: D5 is 10 points.
  3. If none of the three darts hits, the value of the double is deducted.
  4. If your score drops to 0 or below, the game is over.

Doubles practice

  1. You throw at D1 to D20 in order and finally at the bullseye.
  2. You have a fixed number of darts per double (1, 3, 6 or 9). All darts are thrown, even after a hit.
  3. Enter every dart as a hit or a miss.
  4. At the end you see your overall rate, the rate per double and your strongest and weakest double.

This shows you in black and white which double suits you. You can then choose the strongest one as your favourite double.

Scoring practice

Scoring practice at the 20 with average, hit rate and trebles
  1. Your average, the hit rate and the number of trebles.
  2. Enter whether it was a single, double, treble, a neighbouring segment or a miss.

The "100 darts at the 20" exercise. It shows honestly how well you score. Repeat it every week and you'll see your progress.

  1. Choose your target – 20, 19, 18, bull or any other number – and 30, 60, 99 or 100 darts.
  2. Enter every dart: single, double, treble, a neighbouring segment (5 and 1 next to the 20) or a miss.
  3. Multiple players take turns after every 3-dart visit.

Count-Up

  1. Each player has 8 visits of 3 darts.
  2. Every dart scores its full value: treble 20 = 60, bullseye = 50, outer bull = 25, miss = 0.
  3. Players take turns after every visit. After the eighth round the highest total wins.

JDC Challenge

The skills test of the Junior Darts Corporation. It combines scoring and doubles into one comparable total.

  1. Part 1 – Shanghai 10 to 15: 3 darts each at 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. Every hit scores number × multiplier.
  2. Hit the single, double and treble of the same number in one visit (a Shanghai) for 100 bonus points.
  3. Part 2 – Doubles: one dart at each double from D1 to D20 and one at the bull. Every hit scores 50 points.
  4. Part 3 – Shanghai 15 to 20: like part 1, just on the higher numbers.
