Checkout routes and calculation aid

Which segments finish my leg? How to read checkout tips, set-up shots, bogey numbers and the calculation aid in CountDarts.

At the end of a leg, mental arithmetic counts: which segments bring my score to exactly 0? The checkout help does that for you. It shows the best route for the player at the oche.

Player card with 80 left, the checkout tip T20, D10 and the alternatives expanded
  1. The recommended route for the darts you still have in this visit.
  2. Alternative routes, expanded with the arrow. One of them ends on the favourite double D16.

What the tips mean

  • Checkout tip: These segments finish your leg. "T20 · D10" means: treble 20, then double 10.
  • Alternative routes: A safer route or one that ends on your favourite double. The arrow next to the tip expands them.
  • Set up: No checkout is possible with the remaining darts. The app suggests how to leave a good score for your next visit.
  • Bogey: This score can't be finished in one visit with double out. You can only set up.
  • No finish with three darts: The score is more than 170.

The tips are based on your checkout mode, so with single out the routes are shorter than with double out. They adjust after every dart: if you hit single 20 instead of treble 20, the app shows the new route straight away.

Player card with 171 left and the suggestion for setting up
  1. With more than 170 left, the app suggests which score to leave yourself for the next visit.

Favourite double

If one double suits you especially well, for example double 16, choose it as your favourite double. The checkout help then also shows a route ending on it and picks it as the tip if it isn't worse. You can set this per player under "Manage players" or in the settings.

Calculation aid

Calculation aid: below the score is the sum after the last dart
  1. The sum behind your score after every dart. When entering totals you see it while you type.

After every dart, the calculation aid writes the sum below your score, for example "416 − 60 = 356". Handy if you're not yet confident with mental arithmetic. Turn it on in the settings under "Checkout & maths help".

Playing without help

In leagues and tournaments, mental arithmetic is part of the game. Turn off "Show checkout routes" and only your score is shown.

Learn the checkout routes away from the board: in the checkout quiz you see a score, enter your route and find out straight away whether it's the best one. More under Practising checkouts.
